Jeff, these are great points for anyone getting started with a business blog.

Taking the broader view, a business blog must address the culture and attitudes underlying the corporate message. You mention credibility, but there is more than that. A C-suite exec can have a lot of credibility but still be a crappy blogger.

The three musts are: authenticity, individuality and personality. The blogger must speak from the heart and be prepared to voice their own opinions, even when these do not entirely toe the corporate line.

Without this approach, the audience will respond to the blog as no different from any other corporate web page, i.e., “Bye!”

On top of this you can add commitment. The blogger must be prepared to post regularly and for an extended period. Even if there’s little traffic to begin. Blogging is like growing a plant. You plant the seed, water it a bit, add some fertilizer, give it TLC. Neglect it for a bit, and it will start to wither.

So there’s a strategy needed to underpin the 10 elements.

Interesting points in your video. I particularly like it when you tell your students to “make it easy for people to connect.” That is essential for two reasons. One reason is because people are lazy. The second reason is that when you make things easy, you are showing your readers that you know HOW to make it easy. It relates back to your credibility point.

Roger Harris makes a good analogy in his response with the “growing a plant” model – but some (maybe most) blogs include way too much fertilizer.

You might consider, Jeff – putting a text transcript of your video, and offering your readers the option of viewing the video – OR – reading your text. Some people will see your blog from places where there may be issues with audio/video.
    Best regards,
    -John

Roger, I love the analogy to growing a plant. That is so true. I think you have to keep the faith that it WILL grow if i keep at it.

I’ve just started following you today. But i’m wondering about the relative merits you suggest of the domain blog vs. the hosted blogs. How is it much better to have your own domain, given the ease and low fee of using a hosted blog?

  • http://jeffbullas.com jeffbullas

Having your own domain allows you you to “own” your own domain name so of you want to put up a website or transfer it some where else you can at a later date. If you use their domain then you can never transfer it. Cheap and easy doesn’t mean good in the long term ( it is better to “own” rather than just rent). WordPress allow you to use their software for free but also allow you to do it under your own domain name (WordPress.com). Happy Blogging

Jeff … thanks for the download. All these strike me as blocking & tackling, gotta do ‘em all. As you’ve been at it longer, where have you invested to grow your community?

Thank you – I am working on a Free but Limited Holiday outreach program targeted for Vets, active Military personnel and their families this week that are suffering from PTSD. USC Medical Center and TeleHealthCare have combined to bring together the finest in virtual medical technologies and needed a way to quickly get their Holiday message out to the masses. We will be following and deploying the basic blog elements outline here by the weekend.

    Grateful for the help Cheers
