Each week as I read blogs, view online videos and presentations in my areas of  interest (especially social media), I come across some that are worth sharing. Social Media As A News Channel

This week I have 5 selections you may enjoy. In picking these I do keep in mind that some people like to read and others would prefer an online video or even an online powerpoint presentation.  This week we touch on Facebook, the new Apple iPhone 4s, internet trends and key elements for content creation for digital social media.

My top pick this week is an online video  by James Surowiecki at TED where he pinpoints the moment when social media became an equal player in the world of news-gathering.

5.When Social Media Became News: James Surowiecki: Video

I wrote a post called “14 Reasons Why Social Media Happened” and this online Video at Ted.com (an inspirational small non profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, which started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds, Technology, Entertainment and Design ) provides an additional dimension to this with a speech by James that identifies when social media moved into a mainstream news channel and medium in its own right.

James Surowiecki pinpoints the moment when social media became an equal player in the world of news-gathering: the 2005 tsunami, when YouTube video, blogs, instant messages and text messages carried the news — and preserved moving personal stories from the tragedy. To view click on the image below

    I agree that social media has become a new gatherer. I learned about every single major disaster or celebrity death over the last 2 years via Twitter. And then CNN.com or some other news source “broke” the story a few minutes later. In all cases – the news itself was accurate but I’d certainly go to traditional news sources first to get accurate information regarding the event. Definitely a shift.

    Unfortunately, the mainstream media has become solely concerned with selling stories. If it isn’t some kind of exploitable tragedy, they don ‘t want to hear about it. To boot, the tragedy has to be enormous. For example, if you go to http://danielcwhite.lindsayewhite.com/?p=805 you can read about a major crisis in Nashville, Tn in the USA. It has yet to make the NY papers! If anything, it is a small little comment that is easily overlooked. It gets the newspaper companies off the hook as far as not reporting it. How disgraceful!

    People want to communicate. We are social beings. Inevitably, all print media is going to be taken over by the social media sites because why should you buy something that is already free?
