One very important distinction to add is that punctuation kills a hashtag string. #ILoveFrenchFries!TheyAreTheBest just gets rendered as #ILoveFrenchFries for a Twitter hashtag search. This applies to any punctuation at all.

Thanks Troy for adding to the conversation to ensure people use #hashtags effectively

“Hashtags are like Twitter SEO” – Jeff, #hashags are powerful on over 25 social networks and even places to sell, like ebay, etsy, and istockphoto. At RietTag, we call this “seo” #SSO: social sharing optimization. And we hope you’ll look at http://www.ritetag.com – a
bootstrapped startup and tool that I founded.

    The quick-take:

    RiteTag lets you
search words to get tags that reach topic-following people, those
interested in your blog posts, videos, artwork, photographs, and
even offers in eBay and Amazon, shows you the when, who, how many
times, and what in the content that has been tagged with a tag
related to your query, and lets you do a few more things as well.
RiteTag is not an SEO tool, its a SSO tool: for optimizing your
content in social media to reach more, with relevancy.

G+ Hangout and let me demo RT for you soon?

      Hi Saul
Thanks for that Saul. I did register at Rite Tag but I think that a Demo would be good to have some clarity. Away next week speaking in Beirut but good to do that when I am back.

Thanks, @jeffbullas:disqus and I’ll be happy to walk you through RiteTag, show you what you’ll be doing with it. Give me a little time, we are radically changing the sytem and”RiteScore” algorithm. Will get with you promptly.

I’ve seen some of my following using hashtags for seasonal chronic. For instance #SummerStory or #HolidayChronic. I thought it was very smart but in this case as the hashtag is unique, how its helps the SEO on twitter ?

  • http://jeffbullas.com Jeff Bullas

It means you are delivering the tweet to groups who are relevant and that is big for engagement

Hashtags are powerful – but some business use too many! It seems like every mini-project earns a hashtag. From what I’ve seen with effective hashtagging, 3-5 “owned” phrases by an established company/organization is MUCH MORE effective than flooding its Twitter community with a new hashtag weekly.

Very good point. I agree that hashtags can be very overdone. I’m not sure what the perfect number is, but it does seem like a company should pick a list and stick with it, just as they do with keywords.

I’d just like to add that hashtags are a great tool for organizing tweets but overuse of them is not only annoying, it makes your tweet very hard to read and uses up valuable character real estate in the process. Don’t sacrifice content for marketing.

    • http://twitter.com/TaraHornor Tara Hornor

You make a good point…I overused hashtags in the past and noticed just how difficult it was to read my tweets. I’ve scaled back considerably and it seems to have made a difference in retweets.

I would like to add that also companies and brands can check and study the hashtags, which were done by the twitter followers next to their products, it helps to understand topics around the brand

  • http://twitter.com/TaraHornor Tara Hornor

Wow! What a great project. I can only imagine how much this has helped those in the healthcare industry. Do you know if other programs such as this has been started for other organizations?

I agree Jeff. If you are not utilizing the correct hashtags in your tweets is like tweeting in the dark. It is critical if you are trying to engage and grow your network.

Hello, I’m a student studying Social Media Theory & Practice with @dr4ward at @NewhouseSU. I really enjoyed this blog, however, what are the most common mistakes use when people create hashtags?

  • Carla Méndez Ceja

I think that managing social media is crucial today. But I also think that in Mexico, companies are not prepared yet to manage this kind of communication. In the last months we´ve seen a lot of brand crisis due to a lack of knowledge and abilities to manage social networks, companies does not have crisis management programs and of course, they always blame followers or bloggers of their own mistakes. Even though is important to generate popular Hash Tags to become trend topic this must not harm the brand´s reputation.
