“SEO experts generally agree that off-page link building techniques can contribute around 80% of the effectiveness in any SEO campaign.”

Um, *I* don’t know any such experts. That’s the craziest (wrong) statistic I’ve seen about SEO in a LONG time,

LOL, that was the first thing that leapt out of the article for me as well. Such a ridiculous figure and completely incorrect. If that’s in there, how much of the rest of the article is going to be worthwhile? Really.

We have a website for a magazine that runs parallel to a main site, but on a different platform. Web traffic was fine to the magazine site till April 2011, when Panda struck. I think Google decided our magazine was a content farm, and pointed people to the main institutional website instead. Is this possible? We responded by clearing out any possible duplicate content, but even the magazine’s original stuff has traces on the main site (eg a headline pointing out). Now the pressure is on to quit the small sub-site and place the magazine on the main site platform. Any tips to get traffic back up?

I haven’t gotten to look at your site yet but it seems to have suffered some sort of penalty from Google which is very serious, if you have submitted the review, pls make sure that you have followed their current guidelines before review submission, the review process might take months. Pls contact me on LinkedIn and tell me more about your problem I might be able to give you some suggestions. Thanks

I have got the same kind of tactics applied on my site, http://piconect.com and we are trying our best to rank with those tactics. The penalty in this case I believe is due to duplicate content.

What a great article! The image you included implies the importance of adding tags in addition to completing the SEO section in your WordPress posts. I have read somewhere else that Google doesn’t give any credibility to the WordPress tags any longer so I have stopped including them altogether. I was just wondering if you had any more insight on this topic?

    • http://twitter.com/HuyenTruongMBA Huyen Truong

Hi there, tags are still working for me, however remember to tag relevant keywords, don’t tag any keywords that are not mentioned at all in the article!

  • Hemender

Thanks for sharing that useful post i”ll keep in mind your useful tips and will apply for my blog.

“And finally, source your own networks for possible opportunities to build more links. Business contacts, suppliers, distributors, family members, friends, even your children’s school, all have the potential for providing you backlink opportunities. If you have been nice to them and they like you, ask for a free backlink on their website.”
The second part of this is so important to follow through on.

no matter what you do. You will be stuck with top competitors like amazon, bestbuy when doing seo for competitive or easy keywords. Seo is difficult and time consuming. You might have good content but will stay below amazon product page even if that page has no useful content. And if you do a bit of off-page seo, there is that element of losing your websites to updates.

The blog should be part of your domain not separate. Creating content on your blog is important in onsite domains SEO with its fresh unique content

I have been involved on LinkedIn, concerning a discussion on your comment. Blog’s utilized on site and off site are useful. It would appear from the discussion, that most thought on site as well because the work load was less.

Meaning not worrying about maintaining another site such as the blog. When building an off site blog you are doubling the work load, but are also gaining a valuable link source. Final outcome, it really is up to the user and what is intended out of it. Like formal or informal blogging.

    Hi Jeff,

A great post. I agree with you – in my tests, off-page SEO can really make a difference and I have examples of websites that has zero content but ranking well purely down to the strength of my backlinks.

    Thanks.

I enjoy reading this stuff about dealing with search engines. All of you make it sound so mysterious. I own a small seasonal service business, and I have a lot of competition. I’ve been advertising on Google and Yahoo for years, spending thousands of dollars. When a business has considerable competition you soon learn that not everyone can be on the first page for your top keywords. So the search engines rotate the listings so everyone gets a shot at page one. They also regionalize searches. I live in the Midwest so my site won’t show up in a southern or western region. I know this to be true by conversations with friends who live in Arizona and Florida who tell me they can only find my site by typing in the name of the business. I also notice that my positioning in the natural searches is better every other year. This is my down year so I must spend more advertising money to get noticed. So far, I’ve spent more money at Yahoo than Google. Currently, I’m on page one at Yahoo and page three at Google. I think all this business about links, relevant content and page optimizing is pure bunk for someone in my category. I have one product and competition is fierce. Bottom line is this – every calculation the search engines make is geared toward increasing profits and no matter what you do to your website you must do one thing and that’s spend money. Everything else is speculation. Googgle and Yahoo engine4ers must laught like crasy when they ready this stuff. I know I do

search is becoming more and more exact and accurate than Google search
engine, you know why, because in my conclusion, Google has more relied on
Backling i thing 70% google search facetor relied on this back linking.
