Great article, Heather. Unless I had seen your article with my own eyes I would not have guessed that 1 our of 4 small businesses have no sm strategy in place. Honestly, from looking around at the various social sites and the sm blogs, i would have put that number much higher. maybe even 50 or 60 percent.

For a long time, i did not have much of one either, but recently i have seen the light and have a solid plan in place, for which I am very grateful. I hadn’t realized until I started down this path how big a deal social had become.

Its enormous, and I get it now. Well, get it in still a newbie kind of way, but I am getting it. thanks again for a great post.

      Hi Stephen,

Thank you so much for reading – I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yes – I, too, thought that it would have been a higher number. I think with all the free material out on the web nowadays, it is very easy to find helpful strategy documents and worksheets that really assist in helping businesses formulate that social plan.

Glad to hear that you have a strategy in place!

There is a lot of free material I have found. What I have also found though, is that without a way to judge its quality of content, (like some experience), your default decision-making item is the quality of the marketing. Sometimes the excellent material is marketed well and sometimes the not-so-excellent material is marketed even better.

So my trial period for figuring out if things work well is lengthened. But I keep plugging along. Thanks again for a great article.

This is a good article. It discusses what everyone should already know by now, but does display a little bit more encouragement that should hopefully get more people socializing.

It all comes down to how much time we’ve got on our hands, and if we want to put social before content.

Heather, thanks for the article – I hope to see more.

Thanks so much, Alex! Seeing as how I’m on social ALL the time – it really is like the Vegas of marketing – social never sleeps! The more actively a brand participates on social, the better return they will see via traffic to their site, engagement on their social pages, etc.

I’m hoping you’re having good social luck this year so far!

I agree, social media is always alive. The World never sleeps! :)

I’ve had a good run so far, and I am trying to improve as much as I can, I also try not to overdo something that’s perfectly fine and working like it should.

        Thank you!

This is an awesome article, Heather… Great steps on what brands can do to appear more human and connect with its audience (even non customers).

The most important ones appear to be points 2 & 4. Brand interaction will be much more fun if they pay close attention to those aspects…

As Alex said, looking forward to reading more like this one…

Nice post, Heather. I think being active and responsive are the most important points here.

Social media is the direct line of communication for customers to contact the brand. Sure content is important to entertain the community and inform of company news and updates, but without that support, marketing messages feel disingenuous. Brands need to give in order to be heard.
