21 Awesome Facebook Facts and Statistics You Need To Check Out

Facebook facts

It is rumoured that Facebook was going to call the like button “awesome”. But they didn’t.

That is a good thing because the word awesome is over used already. It is often trotted out to try and make the ordinary a little more extraordinary. You may also have noticed I used it in the “headline”. But I couldn’t help myself.

That is maybe one time too many. Sorry.

So back to Facebook. Facebook was the first social media network I joined in 2008 and at the time there were about 50 million users but growing rapidly. This seeming fad at the time was not seen as anything but a passing phase.

How wrong were those dinner party discussions.

The Facebook global numbers

Today there are nearly 1.4 billion users that are spread all around the world. It connects different cultures and allows us to share with family and friends in real time.

The USA and Canada is now just a sub-set of the Facebook global family.

  • Asia Pacific is the largest at 449 million
  • Europe has another 301 million.

The Facebook ecosystem

In the Facebook ecosystem there are apps and apps.  From messaging apps including WhatsApp and Messenger, to visual apps like Instagram and even Occulus. Occulus is the virtual reality technology that Facebook bought for $2 billion just over 12 months ago.

Their numbers are also large by any measure.

  • Instagram with 300 million+ users
  • WhatsApp with 700 million
  • Facebook messenger has 600 million users

These three are still to be monetized with ads and the potential earnings of this Facebook ecosystem is staggering with $12.47 billion revenue alone just from Facebook in 2014.

So watch that space over the next 5-10 years.

    Hey Jeff,

Now days I find it odd that there are people still without Facebook accounts. Especially from looking at these statistics. But they’re still out there!

One thing you have to take notice, especially if you have a blog or static website, is that mobile use is getting more and more popular. Just speaking for myself, I would never get on Facebook through my mobile, but now I find that I get on at least once a week. The Google update on April 21st will definitely give people the incentive to make their sites mobile ready and you’ll definitely see more people signing on through their mobile.

Thanks for sharing these stats! If you have a business, especially a home business, you definitely don’t want to sleep on Facebook based on these stats!

79% of all users are accessing Facebook from their mobile.

This fact highlights where a marketer should focus while devising content strategy for FB.

Facebook is certainly a force to contend with and it goes without saying that if you aren’t marketing on Facebook, you are losing out on a great opportunity. These figures are startling but I would love to know more about Facebook’s retention rate. Is Facebook making new customers faster than it is losing customers who are disturbed about Facebook’s seeming greed compared to other social networks? I know they are losing millennials to Instagram but it would be interesting to see what’s happening with other demographics.

    Interesting post!

And according to FB’s quarter financial report, mobile ads now contribute 73% of its ad revenue in Q1 2015. Go mobile or go home?

BTW — I found one of the stats slightly outdated. Facebook announced that there were more than 350 millions photos uploaded daily in a press release – not 300 millions (stats from 2013, source: https://fbcdn-dragon-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/851575_520797877991079_393255490_n.pdf). But I suppose that’s no big deal. :)

Great roundup, the 20,000 users per second is absolutely insane.

Any chance of an updated article for 2016?
