AI face generator tools are becoming increasingly popular as a way to create realistic and unique human faces. These tools use machine learning algorithms to generate images of human faces that can be used for a variety of applications, including art, gaming, and virtual reality.
Try this AI-powered business tool:
- Airgram is an AI-tool that records, transcribes, summarizes, and shares meeting conversations. It transcribes speech into searchable text and creates sharable video clips.
But just how good are they? I decided to test-run a few platforms for myself to find out.
In this article, I will explore some of the best AI face generators available today. I’ll be covering how they work, how much they cost, and how good the results are. Let’s get started!
What is an AI face generator?
Before we jump into the platforms, let’s talk about what an AI face generator actually is.
An AI face generator is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can create realistic human faces. It utilizes deep learning techniques to generate new and unique faces that do not correspond to any specific individual.
The AI face generator typically consists of two components: an AI generator and a discriminator. The generator is responsible for producing new images of faces, while the discriminator evaluates the generated images and tries to distinguish them from real human faces.
Through an iterative training process, the generator improves its ability to create more convincing and realistic faces, while the discriminator becomes better at identifying AI-generated images.
The training data for an AI face generator usually comes from a large dataset of human faces, allowing the model to learn the patterns and characteristics of human facial features such as eyes, nose, mouth, and overall face structure.
Once trained, the generator can produce novel faces by sampling from a latent space or by modifying specific attributes, such as gender, age, or ethnicity.
Why use an AI face generator?
You might be wondering why you would use an AI face generator, to be honest I thought the same thing. My first thought was are these AI tools just going to be used by scammers as a way of shielding their true identity?
But then I did a little research and found that there is actually quite a few applications for AI faces in the business world. For instance, you might need to create realistic looking characters for a video game, or want a face for your AI chatbot.
Best AI face generators in 2023
Alrighty, now that we know what the heck an AI face generator is, let’s take a look at some of the most popular platforms.
1. This Person Does Not Exist
ThisPersonDoesNotExist is a popular AI face generator that uses machine learning algorithms to generate realistic human faces.
The platform uses a dataset of real human faces to create new images that are indistinguishable from real photos. With ThisPersonDoesNotExist, users can generate new images of human faces with just the click of a button.
I decided to have a play with this tool. I liked that you could generate a preview of an image without having to hand over any credit card details. You only pay for the images you want to download. They also have the option for a free download, however that comes with a watermark and you can only use the image for personal use.
I put in the parameters of the person I wanted to create; gender, age and ethnicity. I must say I wasn’t super impressed with the results – as I asked for a person aged 25-35 and the result looked more like someone in their late 40s!
Features of This Person Does Not Exist
- AI-generated faces: The website generates and displays realistic human faces that do not belong to real individuals.
- Randomization: Each time the page is refreshed or accessed, a new face is generated, ensuring a unique and non-repeating experience.
- Realism: The generated faces often exhibit high-quality and detailed features, aiming to closely resemble actual human faces.
- Diversity: The faces generated can span a wide range of ethnicities, ages, genders, and other facial attributes, providing a diverse set of possibilities.
- Privacy: Since the faces are entirely generated by AI, they do not correspond to any real individuals, preserving privacy and anonymity.
- Educational purposes: The website serves as a demonstration of the capabilities of AI in generating realistic human faces, showcasing advancements in machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
- Non-commercial use: Typically, the generated faces on “This Person Does Not Exist” are available for non-commercial use, allowing users to explore and experiment with the generated images for personal or educational purposes.
2. Fotor
Fotor has introduced an AI face generator feature that allows users to create realistic human faces based on text descriptions. The AI technology uses deep machine learning to generate these faces, taking into account factors such as gender, age, and other traits specified by the user.
The generated face portraits are unique, as they are created from scratch by artificial intelligence. Users are free to create as many face portraits as they desire and use them for various purposes, such as creative inspiration, profile pictures, or simply for fun.
I decided to put this AI face generator through its paces, so I gave it a detailed description of myself to see if it could generate anything remotely similar to what I look like.
Fotor required me to create a free account in order to view the results, thankfully it’s integrated with gmail so I was able to do that at the click of a button.
Looking at the results – I must say I wasn’t overly impressed. The AI generator got basic things in my description incorrect, like the eye color. That said, it did create a much more attractive anime version of myself, which stroked my ego a little.
The faces generated by Fotor are not exactly realistic, nevertheless this was a fun generator to play with.
Features of Fotor:
- Create human faces from scratch in seconds.
- Generate face portraits based on text descriptions.
- Customizable appearance of AI-generated faces.
- Ability to specify gender, age, and other traits.
- Customize facial features such as face shapes, angles, hairstyles, eye colors, skin tones, etc.
- Option to include facial accessories like glasses, makeup, scars, and more.
3. Generated Photos
Generated Photos is an AI face generator that specializes in providing high-quality images of human faces.
Unlike some other AI algorithms that scrape images from the internet, Generated Photos claims to use a proprietary dataset that is created in their own studio. This dataset consists of tens of thousands of model-released images taken in a controlled environment, ensuring consistent look and quality for each face.
When I go to the website I’m immediately put off by the price. These guys want $199/year just to use their AI face generator. Crikey! That said, they do offer a free 3-day trial. However, if you forget to cancel your subscription before the trial period is up, there are no refunds. So be aware!
They also offer a monthly subscription for $19.99/month. Again, I feel this is a pretty hefty price tag for just one type of generator. In any case, for the purposes of this article I decide to go for a free trial.
The generator is easy enough to use and offers a lot of customisation offers so you can generate the perfect face for your needs. However, I still don’t think it’s worth the price tag.
Features of Generated Photos:
- Uses a proprietary dataset captured in their own studio.
- Tens of thousands of model-released images are taken in a controlled environment.
- Consistent look and quality for each face in the dataset.
- Images are tagged, categorized, and added to the dataset for machine learning training.
- Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are employed to create faces that have never existed.
- Additional machine learning processes are applied to identify and remove flawed faces.
- Suitable for a wide range of applications in design, marketing, and creative projects.
4. Anonymizer
This platform is pitched to people who want to protect their online identity. It allows you to create a photo that looks like you but is not you (if that makes sense).
The tool is free which is great, but only if you want to use the generated images for personal use. If you want to use them commercially, you’ll need to purchase a licence. The platform also doesn’t store any data, which is good news in my book.
To generate a face, you need to upload an image of yourself. The generator then gives you dozens of images to choose from.
I tried it out, uploading a clear, close-up headshot. The results this AI face generator gave me were interesting to say the least…I didn’t think any of them looked remotely like me! I was also aged by 30 years which was a tad concerning.
While I could see a use case if you just wanted AI faces with specific attributes for a business use, I don’t see why anyone would want to use this for their personal profiles, unless you don’t want anyone to know what you look like. Give it a go and see what you think!
Features of anonymizer:
- Free to use
- For personal use only
- Upload an image of yourself to generate AI faces
- Realistic images
5. NightCafe
NightCafe also offers an AI face generator. To create faces with this platform, you need to provide a text description of the face you wish to create.
Once again, I provide a detailed description of myself to see if this generator can create anything that looks remotely like me. In order to view the images I needed to create a free account with them. Again, this platform is integrated with gmail so I could create an account in 2 clicks which I appreciated.
Disappointingly, I’m only presented with one image to view, unlike other platforms that gave me dozens. This generator also got basic instructions incorrect (like blue eyes instead of brown) and the image is video-game like, not realistic at all.
If your main aim is to create characters for video games this could be a great option for you, it’s just a shame that it only give you one option at a time.
Features of NightCafe:
- Provide a text description to generate a face
- Free account signup (credits included)
- Good for those wanting more artistic styles
6. FY! Studio
Alrighty, here we have another AI face generator that requires you to input a text description in order to generate a face. Once again, I give the generator a detailed description of myself to see if it can produce better results than the other platforms.
Once I enter the details, I’m given an option to choose a style for my AI face. There are a range of different options to choose from, and I think this is a great feature for those wanting more control over the output.
Unfortunately, there’s no realistic option though! I decide to go for a photography style.
The results are…interesting. I’m given four AI faces to choose from. In one, the generator seems to have taken “photography style” literally, and has given my face a camera lens for a nose.
The other options aren’t much better if I’m honest, one option has given me two different coloured eyes, the other two are a bit better but not by much. Nevertheless a fun experiment!
Features of FY! Studio:
- Creates AI faces from text description
- Free account
- Four options provided
- Lots of styles to choose from
