Create AI Music with Suno

Here’s a step-by-step playbook on how to get started making AI music with Suno. Suno v4 has significantly improved AI music generation, making it almost indistinguishable from human-made tunes.

Key advancements include enhanced vocal quality, improved control features like ‘personas’ for consistent sounds, and the ability to upload your own audio to create new tracks or cover songs. It’s also incredibly fast, generating songs in mere seconds.

  1. Open the ‘Create’ Section and Select V4
    • Navigate to the Suno homepage, which allows you to browse songs generated by others.
    • To begin creating your own, click ‘Create’.
    • Ensure that V4 is selected as your generation model, as it sometimes defaults to 3.5.
  2. Generate in Default Mode (Quick Start)
    • You can start with the super easy default mode.
    • Toggle on or off the ‘Instrumental’ option depending on whether you want vocals or not.
    • Enter a simple prompt describing the song you want. For example, “Mississippi delta blues song about a sad AI”.
    • Click ‘Create’. Suno will generate songs incredibly fast, usually within 5 to 10 seconds, and they are typically 2 to 4 minutes long. The vocal quality in V4 is a significant improvement, sounding much more natural and less “AI-like”. The audio is also high-fidelity and crisp.
  3. Switch to Custom Mode for Advanced Control
    • For more customisation, switch to ‘Custom’ mode.
    • In this mode, you have the option to enter your own lyrics or have Suno help write them.
  4. Choose Your Lyric Model
    • If you choose to have Suno write lyrics, you have two main options:
      • Classic Lyric Model: This model generally produces more standard-sounding lyrics.
      • Remy Model: This model is designed for more creative and unique lyrics.
    • You can also try both models, or mix and match, and rewrite parts yourself as needed.
  5. Define Your Song’s Style and Exclusions
    • Input your desired musical style or genre. You can use specific combinations like “dark electrotango Eerie trap” or “haunted Mambo dream core”.
    • A cool feature is the ability to exclude certain elements or styles (e.g., ‘no drums’ if you want something ambient and atmospheric).
  6. Utilise Personas for Consistent Sound Across Songs
    • Personas allow you to maintain a consistent vocal quality and style across multiple songs, which is great for albums or film projects.
    • To create a new persona:
      • Go to ‘Persona’ and then ‘Create New Persona’.
      • Select an existing song whose style and vocals you want to replicate.
      • Name your persona (e.g., ‘ghost’).
      • You can upload an image or prompt for one, and provide a description (e.g., ‘dark Electro Tango’).
      • Choose whether the persona is private or public.
      • Once created, you can select this persona anytime when generating new songs to apply its distinct style.
  7. Edit and Extend Your Songs
    • After a song is generated, you can extend it from the ‘Library’ tab.
    • If you need to fix a specific part within a song, use the ‘Edit’ -> ‘Replace Section’ feature.
      • Highlight the area you want to change (you need to select at least 10 seconds).
      • The lyrics for that section will appear, allowing you to switch out full words or sentences.
      • Confirm the before and after sections to ensure the replacement fits, then click ‘Recreate section’. Suno will provide two new options to preview.
  8. Upload Your Own Audio (Advanced Feature)
    • This is a really fun feature where you can upload your own audio – it could be your singing, a beatbox, a hummed melody, or even random noises.
    • Go to ‘Create’ and click ‘Upload Audio’, then drag in your audio file.
    • You have two main ways to use your uploaded audio:
      • Extend from Exact Recording: Click ‘Extend’ after uploading. Suno will construct a full song while keeping your baseline or melody really close to the original, adding different fills and pauses.
      • Cover Song: Click ‘Cover Song’ instead of ‘Extend’. This option will use your uploaded groove to make a whole song, but it won’t be as exact. It’s great for fixing up sound quality from sloppy recordings or poor audio inputs. You can also use this feature with songs you generate entirely in Suno to reimagine them in different styles using the same melody.
  9. Remaster Old Songs
    • If you’ve been using Suno for a while, you can remaster any old songs you’ve made.
    • Go to ‘Create’ then ‘Remaster’. Suno will regenerate a very similar version of the song using the V4 model.
  10. Other Handy Features
    • Change or generate images for your songs, or upload your own.
    • Like good generations so you can easily find them again under the ‘Library’ tab.
    • Use ‘Get Stems’ to separate vocals and instruments, allowing for further editing.
    • After uploading audio, click ‘Get Whole Song’ to have the uploaded part included at the beginning of the full track.

Suno is a fantastic tool for quick ideation and brainstorming, allowing you to hear your musical ideas without needing a full band. You get 2500 credits per month, which is enough for 500 songs, making the pricing quite reasonable.
