Interesting post, Jeff – I caught it via @Twitter_Tips.

I’m not a media professional or anything but even I kind of enjoy tracking various Twitter stats via tools like bit.ly & Klout, just out of curiosity. Another of Klout’s metrics I like in “compare users” in addition to the RT stats is that it takes into account peoples’ Followers / Following Ratio, not just the raw number of followers they have (which I’ve always thought was a kinda dodgy way to measure “influence” – easily gamed).

Like you, although I’m in Oz I find that about 55% of my “clicks” are from the US, but as a dual citizen who tweets about both Oz & US stuff, I’d have expected that. Aussies, esp. in the grassroots political arena, seem to me to be a bit slower off the mark than their American cousins.

Anyway, I’m glad Twitter Tips featured your post – now I have more tools to go off and play with ;-)

    Cheers.

Excellent article, Jeff! While I’ve heard great things about TweetDeck, I’m a big HootSuite fan myself. HootSuite is web-based, not PC-based. I get all the same great tools, but can access them across several computers.

    • http://www.ariwriter.com Ari Herzog

…ahh, but HootSuite adds an automatic ow.ly link which is very bad for people who like to click within links. See my video take on http://ariwriter.com/why-ow-ly-is-bad-and-bit-ly-is-good/

      Tracy,

Hootsuite is available on desktop now. I use it on my MAC and iPhone! Totally lov’n it.

Jeff, great information here. For social media consultants and marketing/PR firms, who have multiple clients, each with a set of social channels in their campaigns, doing all this manual work becomes hard.

MutualMind platform is a brand management platform for managing social campaigns and to get all of the analytics associated with that campaign. We aggregate data from web, social sites (twitter, facebook) and media sites (youtube, flickr etc) and provide the insights which result from that.

Yes, the ow.ly link is a pain in the tushie (I’ve experienced both sides), but with multiple computers, it’s an ok trade-off in my mind.

Jeff, thanks for the excellent tips here! I hadn’t made use of Klout and Mentionmap yet, and I plan to.

Jeff, this article is great. In fact, its the reason I haven’t closed my browser in over 24 hours (despite it being bookmarked). Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together!

Some great info here, thanks for this. Analytics on social networks seems to be growing, but still quite fragmented, especially when it comes to pulling them all together….then there’s the sentiment and context issues…

Jeff – a wealth of helpful information, as always. This is an area that will continue to grow as we see more tools that go beyond monitoring to measuring.

Didn’t know about the mentionmap. Looks interesting. I’ll have to check it out.

    Jeff,

I’ve been following you for a few days and I love reading your stuff. This is a great posting. I am familiar with the resources you mentioned but hadn’t heard of some of the metrics you use. Do you have a list of what you actually measure via your online presence? (This would obviously work for a brand too).

Again, great job. I look forward to seeing more of your postings.

Thanks Jeff. I’m familiar with some of the tools here but not all the measurements. Now looking forward to more research!

Great article. I typed “how do I measure twitter” on Google, and this came on 10th. It seemed thrustworthy, and it is! I´ve registered to bit.ly, klout and MentionMap already, and understand way more of what I´ve been into the last 6 months. Thanks a lot!

Awesome post. Love the tools. Measurement of influence is critical to determine start/stop/continue decisions on campaigns. It also determines how you dessiminate inforation. For example, knowing you want to Tracy a links open rate you would use a shortening service with good metrics like bit.ly, as you mentioned.

I would also add hootsuite.com in addition to tweetdeck, primarily becuase of the metrics and it’s ability to maintain the integrity of the original link and author.

    Thanks again for the post!

Incredible! I did not realize how much tracking was really possible. This is a great help. I will certainly link back to this article to help people find it.

    Thanks Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the useful breakdown on Twitter tools. Just wanted to add a couple resources that I’ve found helpful. For URL shortening and analysis: goo.gl. Also, like Klout, Twitalyzer (developed by notable Web Analytics Guru, Eric T. Peterson), is another interesting site for looking at Twitter user influence.

    All the best,
    Sherry

Jeff, how about a compare and contrast of Tweetdeck and Hootsuite? I prefer Hootsuite because it is web-based. My work IT won’t allow downloads and I can also schedule Tweets for later. Thoughts?

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for this! Any suggestions on good iPad apps for managing multiple accounts? Hootsuite and Tweetdeck not up to it!

Thanks for reposting this. Seeing as this information references tools that have changed since it was written, as you looking at putting together an updated post? Or do you still think that all of these suggestions are still accurate?

  • Holly F

Can you explain why you would use bit.ly over the shortened links that HootSuite and TweetDeck provide? They track all the click-throughs so why would you need another site to do it? Also, if you use bit.ly tracker then wouldn’t the metrics from HootSuite and TweetDeck be inaccurate?
