  • http://andynathan.net Andy Nathan

This is an awesome post detailing every step. It could easily become an outline to follow for a social media plan. By the way, the most important line you had was the last one about patience. You wait and wait for it to work after busting your butt and all of the sudden you see a massive explosion of results.

Thanks Andy for your comment. Building online assets whether they be social or your website and blog are like building a bricks and mortar asset.
One brick at a time..and keep checking the plans!

Very true! I think that is one problem most businesses forget: to check the plans. I know I sometimes could be better with that.

    thanks Jeff

all relevant points, but sadly most of which are never truly followed by any small business looking at integrating some form of social media strategy to their company (given little time and resourcing)

still, its great info to pass on to those that are deadly serious

Good points . I especially like your point about responding to comments and trying to promote the guest post on stumbleupon and other social media sites. The more you give back the more writing opportunities you will get.

In other words, don’t churn out shit, churn out quality content.
I’m amazed that this simple nugget of truth can be so massively over complicated and over discussed.

I’m also amazed that there’s still this fairytale belief that the internet and the new term ‘social media’ is some sort of magic bullet that will draw in customers and increase sales.

“We need a blog! We need a twitter account! We need it now!”
“What we going to put on it?”
“No idea, but we need one, right now!”

The perception that social media is “free” / “cheap” / “easy” is still very much the status quo amongst companies who just don’t get it.

How much time does a company spend on a pitch for new business?
Quite often, a *huge* amount of time.
Social media should be considered in that light – it’s a pitch, so put some effort in, throw resources at it – spend some money on it!

    << obvious.

Once again, I reiterate, I'm amazed that articles like this are *Still* being written – it's a great article, but for goodness sake, it's bloody obvious!

    • http://jeffbullas.com Jeff Bullas

Thanks Matthew for your comment and it is obvious you “get it”
In my travels and when talking to people you will still be amazed how many “newbies” don’t get it. That is why these articles still get written. I never assume everyone is up to speed with the basics. Many still have their training wheels on. :)

Hi Jeff, This is a fantastic post and a very timely one, for me, since I am preparing to launch my own blog (no, I am not seeking world domination…ha ha…I loved the reference to Dr Evil, though). I think many newbie bloggers and business owners probably overlook the planning that goes into positioning a blog correctly in their market….let alone measuring results to see what has worked or not worked. I know it has taken me months to do my research and planning and even then, I am certain, I will have many trials and will need to refine my strategy along the way. I have bookmarked this page for future reference; and thank you for writing a detailed outline for how to execute a strategic plan.

There is a common misconception among businesses that only the global
brands can benefit from strategic social media marketing, the rationale
being that only the big enterprise organizations have the resources and
people to pursue new ideas and afford success.
