How to Generate Multiple Character Voices from One Recording (using ElevenLabs)

Goal: Create a full cast of characters or narration styles from a single vocal take, preserving your original pacing and emotion.

The Stack:

  1. ElevenLabs: The AI Audio Engine (Speech-to-Speech).
  2. Voice Changer / Speech-to-Speech Tool: The specific engine that maps audio-to-audio rather than text-to-audio.

Outcome: Save hours of recording time by performing a script once and outputting it in infinite voice variations.

The “Old Manual Way” required you to re-record your script every time you wanted a different tone, or hire multiple voice actors for different characters. The “New AI Way” allows you to record one “Master Performance” and simply swap digital vocal cords to produce unlimited variations instantly.

Step 1: Access the Speech-to-Speech Interface

Login to ElevenLabs. The standard tool is “Text-to-Speech,” but for this workflow, we need the engine that analyzes audio waves, not just text.

  • Select: Click the Speech to Speech tab at the top of the screen.
  • Check: Ensure you see the file upload/microphone area, not just a text box.

Step 2: Record Your “Master Performance”

You only need to do this step once. This recording acts as the “skeleton” for all future voices. The AI will copy your speed, pauses, and emphasis exactly.

  • Record: Click the Microphone icon to record directly (or upload a pre-recorded WAV/MP3).
  • Act: Speak normally. You do not need to do an accent or change your pitch. Focus entirely on the emotion and timing you want the final result to have.

Step 3: Map the First Voice (The AI Logic)

Here we apply the first “skin” to your recording. The AI analyzes the prosody (rhythm and stress) of your voice and maps it onto a new digital voice profile.

  • Select Voice A: Choose your first distinct voice from the library (e.g., “Fin – Anxious”).
  • Adjust Logic: Set Stability to 50%. This tells the AI: “Keep my performance style, but change the sound of the vocal cords.”
  • Generate: Click Generate to create your first character.

Step 4: The “Multi-Voice” Swap

This is where you leverage the “Record Once” workflow. Instead of re-recording for a new character, you simply change the filter on the existing audio.

  • Keep the Input: Do not clear your audio file from Step 2.
  • Select Voice B: Go to the dropdown and pick a completely different voice (e.g., “Rachel – Professional”).
  • Generate Again: Click Generate. You now have the exact same performance (same timing, same emphasis) delivered by a completely different “person.”
  • Repeat: Do this for as many variations as you need (e.g., a male narrator, a female narrator, and a cartoon character).

Step 5: Audition and Export

Review your cast of characters and save the assets.

  • Compare: Play the versions back-to-back. Notice how the pacing matches perfectly across all versions, but the tone is different.
  • Download: Click the Download icon on the versions you want to keep. You can now splice these into your video editor as if you hired three different actors.
