    Nice post, Jeff,

    I would not want to make this an exact science and even exact science relies on hyp(e)otheses… so, my unscientific approach to using social media is this: go with the flow.

    It’s quite interesting that some companies are only now waking up to social media marketing.
    Marketing will never be the same, worldwide.

    What to invest in? Use your inTuition to decide on that, I’m sure it will guide you!

    Really interesting post.
    It’s really hard to tell what the next big thing is going to be, especially with so many new innovations coming out.
    While I semi-agree with what Lydia said about going with the flow, I also believe in trying new things. I like to check out all new social innovations that come out and then after playing with them for a bit deciding if it works for me or not. I think this is an approach that companies should be taking. Try new things, find what works for you and your company, run with it. If you can use one platform best for your company and use it well, people will follow. That said, you also have to try and be where your customers are, so like Linda said “go with the flow”. The best part about trying new things is that you may lead the flow to somewhere new.

    This made me think “Nudge”, the book I’m reading by Thaler & Sunstein about how decisions are never as neutral as we’d like to believe ; marketers are capitalizing on the fact that we pay attention to what other people are doing and tend to follow, even if it’s not necessarily the best choice.

    Monitoring the web can help companies keep an eye on what their competitors are doing and how their own projects are faring, but it’s important to keep in mind that social media is a tool. Different platforms become more or less popular as they catch on via word-of-mouth, but I’m sure (looking at your blog) that you’re one of the first to point out that a business has to look internally at its own goals before looking externally for tools that will help them reach those goals.

    It’s an interesting model to apply to Social Media and I still think we are some way from the plateau of productivity here. Yes, it’s good to try new things but there are an awful lot of unplanned, misguided attempts at social media marketing out there and it is something that you can waste a lot of time on if you aren’t disciplined and guided by a proper strategy.

    Interesting post.

    I do wonder if companies tend to think about social media solutions backwards. There are so many options to improve your brand reputation and client intimacy. But companies should go back the drawing board to define what they want to achieve now and in the coming years. A media strategy in combination with the core company strategy is necessary before you make any decision in implementing social media tools.

    Great post, thanks. I didn’t even know there were words for these trend phases (disillusionment, channel pollution). As a terminology fanatic, am having a field day! ; P

    Let’s just hope that Twitter will find the technological means to overcome ‘channel pollution’ and stay a core tool like e-mail did. I invested so much of my soc med strategy in it it would be a disaster if it doesn’t!

    A great writing! Thanks! Especially the curve is very interesting. In my opinion the hype won’t last long. We are moving to a more productive phase where brands really start benefiting from social media. This means they not only use it to increase brand awareness ( mainly broadcasting) but apply a strategy-based approach & pertinent tools and use the results to improve the products and services. Last year only 6% of brands were doing so. Therefore we can expect a strong growth for appropriate solutions and platforms. The hype usually disappears when the society gets better educated so time is our friend :)

    The tech band wagon syndrome never ceases to amaze me.  I suggest that the major drive for companies towards social media at the moment is a fear of being left out. No worries you wont, the bottom line here is that social media is just that, “a place where people can socialise with people they like or have similar interests”. Whatever strategy businesses adopt to nudge in to these communities will fail as they will always be the spare wheel on this wagon. In fact I predict that this invasion of privacy may be the eventual downfall or at least the dilution of platforms like Facebook.  Save yourself the effort and jump to disillusionment.Gordonwww.ourtchguy.co.uk
