10 Tips to double your LinkedIn connections

LinkedIn is the boring brother of Facebook and Twitter.

Sometimes you feel like shaking him and asking if if he knows what it’s like to have a little bit of fun. Comparisons continue to be made including the ones between Facebook and Linkedin. One I have heard that sums it up well is….”Facebook is like hanging out at a barbeque with friends while LinkedIn is the cocktail party“.

Compared to Twitter, the social media rock star that attracts the media spotlight and streams across the bottom of the television, LinkedIn is a bit buttoned up. It’s suit and tie versus jeans and t-shirt. Sometimes you feel like you should be prodding it with a stick.

But despite the comparisons, the jokes and the snide remarks, LinkedIn is not to be underestimated. It can connect you to powerful influencers, provide a focused ecosystem to share your content and be a B2B marketers best friend.

These numbers put some context on the importance and scale of the LinkedIn community.

  • 187 million monthly unique users
  • 3 million LinkedIn business pages
  • 2.1 million Linkedin groups

So what are some simple tips to be more effective on LinkedIn and make use of its global network of movers and shakers?

10 tips to double your LinkedIn connections

Sometimes the simplest tactics are forgotten that can make a big difference over time. With the majority of users having less than 500 connections these tips will provide the guidelines to take it beyond the 1,000 barrier.

  1. Update your status daily. This could include  posting your latest blog post, sharing an interesting Slideshare presentation or an article that is of value to your industry and niche
  2. Participate in (or start) a LinkedIn group discussion weekly
  3. Follow influencers and ask or answer questions on their posts
  4. Join relevant LinkedIn groups and focus on 3-5 of these and stay active on each one
  5. Send one new invite daily and personalize it. Don’t use the standard default invite request
  6. Prominently display your contact information so you make it easy for people to contact you
  7. Endorse people you know for their skills with no expectation of  reciprocation
  8. Promote your LinkedIn profile. Include it on your card, place it in your email signature and on your website/blog
  9. Tweet your LinkedIn updates to Twitter.
  10. Include  links to your blog and website in your LinkedIn profile. This will help you build credibility by displaying your full online presence.

    Thanks for sharing the infographic and the inspiring LinkedIn stories, Jeff! Here’s an update to the infographic: LinkedIn retired the Answers function on January 31, 2013. How about this to replace number 3? Follow influencers and ask or answer questions on their posts. Soon, LinkedIn will open the publishing platform to everyone. To see if you’re in yet, look for an email notification or a pencil in the share an update box on your home page. LinkedIn granted me access on March 7. I’m finding the publishing platform is a great way to share information, strike up a conversation, and make new connections.

      Here’s another tip. When you join a group search for the “i” link in the banner – it tells you who started/owns the group. Then ask to connect to them. Some group owners hide their LinkedIN profile but a quick search by name shows them up. These high profile connections and influencers are invaluable. We got 16 articles published in one group alone because we built a relationship with the group owner …..

    There are some good tips, thanks. However, point 3 – “LinkedIn Answer” was a feature, it no longer exists. There are still many other ways to pose questions and facilitate professional discussions though but I think point 3 is invalid.

    Jeff so an awesome post. I have witness this powerful growth on LinkedIn and like the story shared I too got numerous job opportunity on linkedin only. Even I stop using any job portal. Long before I understand Linkedin will be best platform for professional network and with my understanding of the network I was among the top 5% most popular people on linkedin in 2013 and 2013.     LinkedIn definitely works as a business development tool. I updated my profile, joined some relevant groups and then started making contact and developing a relationship with key members of the groups. Within 2 months I had closed an order for £5000 for advertising on our website. If done properly and respectfully, it can produce not only connections but business for you.

    Hi, What I noticed is that a lot of people have still stacks of business cards in their drawers of people they met in the past. I always recommend them to connect with all these people. As well as with people they worked with in the past. These are often people who might not be thinking of you right now, but once you are connected to them via LinkedIn and become more active on LinkedIn, they might be your next customer.

    Jeff – Loved your post. I especially liked your point that “Sometimes the simplest tactics are forgotten that can make a big difference over time.” I feel that I have bounced back and forth between Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ for a long time. Always running from one source to another, essentially discarding or forgetting these simple tactics. With my limited time, I am struggling to find the “simple tactics” that will bring me the longest and most stable growth of my audience over time.

    In your article it seems that LinkedIn is the forgotten child and should deserve more of our attention. Suppose I only have time for one social platform, do you feel that LinkedIn will give me the biggest bang for my time?
